Ms Brown made a good life for herself selling sex to the single girl and this is hailed as a break through maybe for white women. Black and other women were always having sex single and married, they were working for a living and taking care of their families. Women,( other than white women, who were pampered and made to feel they were something other than themselves (just plain women) ) were liberated by the very system that entrapped white women in glass boxes.  What Helen did was release the valve that contained white women’s  desire for sexual passion was covered under religion, feminine pride and good girl syndrome – all created and promoted by men to brain wash women. However, I don’t think that our obsession with sex is what life is all about and what women’s freedom is hinged upon.  Whether men know it or not, women especially white women were always having sex clandestinely with the yard slave, the pool boy and the mail man. Women’s liberation will not come from sex but from when we succeed in making men see than they cannot and do not own women, that women are independent agents just as they are and society has to embrace that concept. We have a long way yet to go but thanks to Helen for her part in the unfolding revolution.

Helen Gurley Brown, who as the author of “Sex and the Single Girl” shocked early-1960s America with the news that unmarried women not only had sex but thoroughly enjoyed it — and who as the editor of Cosmopolitan magazine spent the next three decades telling those women precisely how to enjoy it even more — died on Monday in Manhattan. She was 90, though parts of her were considerably younger.

A call for compassion for our fellow humans who suffer from mental illness – They are people too desiring of love and acceptance.

Elyns Saks story is touching and has changed my view of the people with mental illness. God knows I judge and judgment is wrong. You cannot see the human if you judge them.

As a young woman, I was in psychiatric hospitals for three lengthy stays. Despite my diagnosis with schizophrenia and my “grave prognosis” — that I would live in a board and care facility and work at a menial job at best — I am a chaired professor of law at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, with a beloved husband, Will, and many good friends. I’d like to tell you how that happened and describe my experience of being psychotic. I qualify that by saying my experience, because everyone becomes psychotic in his or her own way.

Unless you are an immigrant it may be difficult to understand how torn a person could be to appear to turn their back on their country or origin.
